Can a Patch Cord be used to connect two notebooks?

I have a cable called DAX (DAX-C05002) 4Pairs 24 AWG UTP Enhanced CAT-5 Patch Cord. The jack at both ends fits into my two notebooks. I wish to transfer large amounts of data from one to the other. What’s the best way to do it?

This is not possible. Patch cables are designed to connect a PC/Laptop to a device such as a Modem, Bridge, Switch, or router.

If you wish to transfer files between the two laptops/PCs, you will need a CROSSOVER cable. It looks exactly the same as your patch cable, but will have the wording ‘crossover’ along the outside. usually they are a different colour than the standard blue (orange or red typically) to distinguish between patch and crossovers.

Once you get your crossover cable, simply run the Windows Networking Wizard on both computers.
